Artist’s Statement
Margaret enrolled at Stourbridge College in 1994 as a mature student. After completing the Foundation Course, she continued to study at the University of Central England and graduated with a degree in Art and Design.
As a student she worked at The Living Gallery, Stourbridge, and the RBSA ( Royal Birmingham Society of Artists) in Birmingham to gain “hands on” experience in curating exhibitions and the administration involved.
Margaret has exhibited regularly in open exhibitions such as the Mid-Art Annual Exhibitions (1999-2004) held in Himley Hall, and the RBSA. She has also participated in a Wyre Forest Forum Project in Husum, Germany and other group exhibitions in Dudley Art Gallery, Nuneaton Art Gallery, The Wildlife Society’s Annual Exhibition, Bristol, and Netherton Arts Centre Summer Show. Her work continues to be on display at various galleries and exhibition venues throughout the region.
Margaret’s main area of work is mixed media, incorporating painting, printing, collage and photography. She takes her inspiration from the natural and man-made forms in the world around her. Pattern, form, colour and texture have always fascinated her. She uses the camera lens as a “third-eye”. Close-up photography is another way of revealing weird and wonderful compositions from which she creates mixed media collages that have physical texture and tactile surfaces which reflect this fascination.
Photography has become an important tool with which she explores ideas, offering another way to study again concepts which have already been resolved through other mediums. Photography and painting are combined to create images which reflect her desire to get close and personal to her subjects. Different techniques are used in the painting process, which give each image an individuality and identity of its own.
