Since discovering mosaic, Ilona has explored its possibilities as an art form, and the potential use of alternative and found materials - pebbles, crockery, mirror, combined with more conventional glass and ceramic.
Having worked extensively with visually impaired people, form, texture, and a surface to capture and reflect light became increasingly important in both wall panels and sculpture.
Apart from commissioned work, recurring themes centre on human situations, especially those relating to women. Reflecting her interest in environmental concerns, her work frequently draws attention to the natural world and life forms sharing our planet.
As an active member of the British Association for Modern Mosaic, Ilona exhibits nationally. Other major exhibitions included “Art in Ruins” and “The Labyrinth” - international sculpture exhibitions at Dudley Castle, and “Sitting Pretty” – international exhibition of women’s art at The Coventry Gallery, London.
One of her sculptures is in Conoco’s corporate collection.
Until recently, much of her work involved both public art commissions and residencies, resulting in permanently sited art, including Belle View Sculpture Trail, “Paradise Pebble Mosaic” – a peace memorial in Coventry, and an entrance floor mosaic at Russell’s Hall Hospital.
Funding and commissioning bodies include Groundwork Coventry, British Waterways, Castrol UK, RNIB, and local authorities.
Recently, Ilona has created an Etsy site where some of her smaller mosaic items can be viewed, including plaques and unusual jewellery items which include both mosaic and knitted wire, incorporating unusual beads and gemstones.
